Why is peppermint a popular winter scent and flavor?

It all started in Cologne, Germany, in 1670. That was the year a local choirmaster thought of an idea to keep local children quiet in church. He asked a local candy maker to make sugar sticks, and he handed them out to the kids before the long holiday services.  They worked and other people picked up on the idea, spreading it from Germany throughout Europe.  Eventually, people started decorating and flavoring these sugar sticks and by the time the 19th century arrived, they had acquired a) red stripes and b) peppermint flavor.

Seventy-five percent of peppermint essential oil is currently produced in the United States and peppermint oil is the most widely used essential oil in existence.
